Purpose of Sound

The purpose of thrilling music is to set the mood for a surprise to happen or maybe to shock the audience

The purpose of a heroic style of music is to give the audience hope for something good to happen and also a emotional feel good moment.

Diegetic

setting, character, speech, thoughts, props, background, world of story, voiceover from a 1st person narrator, ambient sound effects, (if a character can hear the music or speech or any sound whatsoever in the movie it's diegetic.) Diegetic sound is any sound presented as originated from source in the film's world, another word for diegetic sound is actual sound.

Non-Diegetic

Text, Voiceover (from a 3rd person narrator) and also the music score. Also superimposed text, the sound in a non-diegetic movie is what has been either added in post or what the actors can't hear but the audience can hear, also a countdown to something. Non-Diegetic sound is represented as coming from the source outside of the story space, another term for non-diegetic sound is commentary sound. A play with both diegetic and non-diegetic conventions can be used to create ambiguity (the quality of being open to more than one interpretation) for example horror, or to surprise the audience for example comedy.

Volume Control

The control of how loud or quiet sound is, also to set the or emphasize the mood or atmosphere this also usually parallels with PACE (or editing). Sounds should be quiet during emotional moments during a tragic or sad scene, the reason why the music speeds up in the subway fight scene from The Matrix is because it is a thrilling experience seeing Neo fighting Mr Smith.
