Main productions roles

Producer - The producer creates the conditions for making the film. They supervise, coordinates, initiates and controls the matters such as funding, hiring key personnel, and arranging distributors. The producer is involved throughout the whole phase of making the film/tv show from development to completion. An example of a famous producer is Quentin Tarantino while he is most known for being a director as well as a producer he has also starred in nearly all of his own films.

Director - They are the mastermind behind the films that are made, they control the flow of actors, plot of the film. They also manage the location and often produce their own films. Alfred Hitchcock is one of the most famous directors in the the world.


Cinematographer - They are in charge of the lighting crew and the camera crew. Typically the director tells them how they want a shot to look. The cinematographer often chooses cameras, film stock, lens and filters. They do this to be able to understand what the scene is meant to feel like, they do this under the intentions of the director. The relationship between the director and cinematographer often vary with both having different opinions. Once the director and cinematographer get used to each other the director will allow some creativity to be used. An example of a famous cinematographer is Christopher Nolan, who is best known for the Dark Night Trilogy (2005-2012)

Editor - They assemble the various shots into a film, with the help of the director. There are usually severally assistant editors. The film/tv show editor usually works with raw footage, consisting of various shots and camera angles to compile them into sequences to create a finished motion picture.  An example of an editor is Chris Dickens who edited the movie Slumdog Millionaire.



Sound designer - They are in charge of the post-production sound for the film to make it sound as well as it can. Sometimes this involves great creative license and other times, it may simply mean working with the Director and Editor to balance the sound to their liking An example is Ben Burtt who did the sound design for Indiana Jones and Star Wars.




Production Designer - They are responsible for creating the physical, visual appearance of the film - settings, costume, character makeup. The production designer works closely with the Director and the Cinematographer to achieve the look of the film. An example of a good production designer is for Mad Max: Fury Road. Another example is Sir Ken Adam who did the production design for the James Bond films in the 60's and 70's.



Costume Designer - They are in charge of the clothing and costumes worn by the actors/actresses that appear on screen. They are also responsible for designing, planning and organising the construction of the garments down to the fabric, colours and sizes. The costume designer works closely with the Director to understand and interpret  "character".


Actors - They are the people who act in a dramatic production and who works in film, television, theatre and radio in that capacity. An example is Leonardo Di Caprio who is one of the highest paid actors in the world and has starred in films such as Titanic and Inception.
